If plan A don't work... Use another letter

Updated: Jul 18, 2022

Hello my warriors,

We always like to have a plan. We want to be prepared, for any contingency.. but that doesn't always happen does it.

I remember back when I first started teaching, I was barely 18 years old. I worked for my studio shortly after hurricane Andrew.

I was merely the office person that would help you get on the mat when you started coming to class, and the chief instructor would take charge.

Minimal teaching duties and fairly simple. Although I wanted to be an instructor, and I wanted to maybe have a studio one day, I was not sure how that was going to happen.

One day the instructor did not show up. No phone call and never let me know what was going to happen. Kids were lining up. I decided someone has to either close the classes or take charge. I took charge and!

I started the class yelling and finished the class screaming at these kids. I felt like I failed. I felt like these kids will never come back. I decided right there I just have to get better and now I know how crazy it is. I have to be prepared, so I made one plan as a backup. The next day my backup plan worked but then something else happened. I needed another plan and didn't have it.

A week had gone by and my instructor never showed up for work. I decided I have to have more than one backup I have to be ultra-prepared.

So I sat down everyday before classes looked at my list of who should come to class

(remember there was no booking system in 1994)

I knew which kids needs to be where. I figured out who to put with who. I Made a lesson plan, so I wouldn't have to guess what we're supposed to be doing today.

I became super organized. Classes went great! Still a few issues every now and then but not as bad as it was when I first started all on my own.

To this day, I make lesson plans at the end of the week for the following week. I have my own block curriculum that I designed and update annually. I make videos every Friday, so that my students are prepared for their classes, When my members use the booking system and I see how many students are going to be on the floor: I know exactly where to put them, how to place them and what to teach them.

You may have a plan A, and it may not work. Don't worry there's 25 or so more letters in the alphabet that you can use 😊
