As we celebrate Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave everything for our freedom. But there’s another legacy tied to their service—one that directly impacted the rise of martial arts in America, including the lineage we carry forward here at House of Warriors.

During the Korean War, many American servicemen were stationed in South Korea. While there, they encountered traditional Korean martial arts, especially Tang Soo Do—a system known for its discipline, striking techniques, and mental focus. Korean masters, many of whom had trained under great hardship, welcomed these soldiers into their dojangs (training halls).
Among those servicemen was a young Chuck Norris. Like many others, he was profoundly changed by what he experienced on the mats. When his tour of duty ended, he and others returned to the U.S. not just with military experience—but with a burning desire to share the values, techniques, and power of martial arts with others. This marked the beginning of martial arts’ explosive growth in America.

These returning veterans helped martial arts flourish on U.S. soil, and their influence opened doors for many Korean masters to start new lives and studios in America. In fact, the Tang Soo Do lineage that House of Warriors honors is rooted in this powerful cross-cultural connection.
Today, as we train our kids in self-defense, as our teens push through kickboxing workouts, and as our adults gain confidence through martial arts and fitness in Vero Beach, we are standing on the shoulders of giants—both American and Korean.
So while Memorial Day is a time to remember those we’ve lost, it’s also a reminder that through their sacrifice, a greater good has grown. One that continues to empower generations, teach respect, and help build stronger, safer communities—like the one we’re creating here in Vero Beach, Florida.
Train hard. Live honorably. Remember those who came before us.
