The absolute saddest time in my life...or ..not?

Hello Warriors

Your fave Martial Artist here 😊 Recently I was reflecting on the 1 year anniversary of the mess 2020 had become. March 13th we were ordered to close and immediately were left in the dark…

Let me re-cap the entire story.

Feb 28 Eddie, Dustie & myself finished the move into our new facility on Washington Ave. Excited and hopeful we opened. The first week of March we increased our membership and were growing to becoming a big powerhouse in Downtown Homestead.

Then… March 13th..we were shutdown due to the pandemic…I mean I just moved in…and now we are closed..

Well, I realized, I’m not the only one..and it was time to pivot.

I immediately pivoted to zoom (I had used zoom for years) and messaged all our members. I was hopeful and ready. Eddie and I worked the choreography for the class we were excited to teach…and then…As our tuition billing came in before our first zoom class…40% of our members disappeared..no notice just decided to ghost us…the part that hurt most..it was my longest running students..people who were with me for years and who I went over the top for.. I was crushed..and I didn’t know how I would pay the bills..I mean I just moved in and somehow I felt it was taken away..What do I do?

I said, well..

· I lost 40% of my people, but I still have 60%

· Allot of my senior students left, but I still had my loyal black belts and lots of newer students who wanted to train

· I didn’t have enough money, but the landlord said pay what you can

· I still have my employees(awesome people btw), I can keep paying them and sacrifice elsewhere

· I have a beautiful new studio with no one in it, but I still have a place and everyone can still see it on zoom when we teach

For every negative, I had a positive. I decided to keep grinding. I worked hard, Eddie came in and taught zoom. We kept the same schedule, so there would be normalcy. I kept in touch with all I could.

Even when there was a time I don’t think I would make and talked to Eddie & Dustie..not sure of the reaction…Their sadness motivated me more..I would not let them down.

I remember a Portuguese proverb. “If you’re going to lose a fight, make it the hardest win of the other guys life”

We opened on May 11th, 2020 for in person training..still pretty light. We adapted a new system, and slowly built ourselves back up..Our stride kicked in December 2020.

Where are we now? Still a ways to go for sure , but check this out

· We are now at the number of members we were before the shutdown

· We are #1 on google with the best reviews

· We have grown closer to our staff and the members over the course of the year

· We have made great new relationships with our newest members

On March 25, 2021 we held our belt promotion. A year ago we tested people online and delivered their belts in person at their home. As I looked on the Table and looked at the belts..while it is a bit sad to see only a handful of senior belts. The ones who stuck it out with us the whole year and believed in us, there were also allot of yellow and orange belts! There were also quite a few green belts..That means they trained full year..They were the first new members to come in when We re-opened!

We have had an average of 10-15 members testing every quarter..now it 50 +…..HOW COOL IS THAT!! 😊

So as I reflect, It wasn’t that sad…It actually was an awesome year that taught me too think out of the box to service my members. To pivot and FIGHT for everything…Like a Martial Artist should do..pivot , adapt and fight.

Here’s to a great 2021 and Always keep fighting for all your dreams and desires
