This week, as part of our ongoing effort to make The House of Warriors a place that inspires both visually and spiritually, I completed another remodel inside our studio. On our freshly painted black wall, I created a new display for all five of my black belt certificates — from 1st Degree to 5th Degree Black Belt in Tang Soo Do / Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan.

Each certificate represents years of discipline, training, and perseverance. I designed the display with a mix of modern minimalism and traditional texture, combining reclaimed wood with subtle LED lighting to make the wall both artistic and meaningful. This wasn’t about showing off achievements — it was about showing our roots. I wanted every student who walks through our doors to see where I came from and understand that we all come from somewhere.
During class, one of my little red belts asked about a technique we call “Great Gate.” I explained that the version we practice today is a modified evolution of the original movement from my former system. That’s the beauty of martial arts: over time, like a river that splits into new paths, systems evolve — but they never lose their source.
I told her, “Someday, if you meet another martial artist who trains in Tang Soo Do, their technique might look different. But they’ll recognize the roots — and know where your instructor came from.”
Understanding your lineage gives you identity, respect, and purpose. For kids, it builds pride and awareness. For teens, it anchors them to something real in a world that moves too fast. For adults, it reminds us that our journey — in martial arts or in life — is part of a much larger story.
Whether you train in a modern kickboxing system or a traditional karate style, knowing your lineage connects you to generations of warriors who came before you. And when we teach that to our students, we help them not only learn techniques — but understand where those techniques came from, and why they matter.
So next time you bow onto the mat, remember:You’re not just stepping into today’s class. You’re stepping into history.
