In Tang Soo Do, there is a term we often use called “Shi Sung,” which means line of sight or to look before you act. It’s simple to say, but incredibly deep in meaning.
When we perform forms (hyung), before every turn we’re taught to look first — not just move. Before we strike, block, or kick, we align our eyes, focus our attention, and direct our intention. In self-defense training, we do the same. You look where you’re going to move, check for danger, find your opening, and then act with purpose. That’s Shi Sung.
But this principle extends far beyond martial arts technique — it’s also a powerful way to approach life.
At The House of Warriors Vero Beach martial arts , I often remind students that having a line of sight in class is the same as having clarity in your day-to-day life.

For children, Shi Sung teaches awareness and focus. Before reacting or rushing, they learn to stop, look, and think. Whether it’s in schoolwork, sports, or friendships, that extra second to look first can change how they handle challenges and emotions.

For teens and adults, Shi Sung reminds us that direction matters. When we have our eyes fixed on a clear target — a goal, a habit, or a change we want to make — we move with intention instead of distraction. In self-defense, that could mean scanning your environment before you act. In life, it might mean assessing a situation before reacting in anger or frustration.
Every time we bow onto the mat, we’re training more than muscles — we’re training mental focus. We’re learning to align our eyes, mind, and purpose in the same direction. That’s what makes martial arts such a transformative practice — it improves how we see the world.

So whether you’re defending yourself, tackling a new challenge, or guiding your child’s growth, remember:Before you move — look first.See where you’re going. That’s the power of Shi Sung, the true line of sight of a martial artist.
