On Saturday, September 27th, we hosted our Open House at House of Warriors in Vero Beach, and it was a great success! The highlight of the day was our martial arts demonstration team, a showcase that reminded me of the true power of performance.
Back in the early to mid-1990s, when I first worked in a martial arts studio, we didn’t have Facebook, TikTok, or Instagram to promote our programs. There were no text blasts, no email campaigns—email itself was barely even used around 1994. If you wanted people to know who you were, you had to be creative.

One of the first big opportunities I had was rebuilding a failing demo team. The instructor at the time gave up on it and handed me the reins, saying, “Do whatever you want.” So I did.
I knew that a demonstration wasn’t about being long or complicated—it was about energy, impact, and keeping attention. Even back then, before the internet age, I understood that people wanted short-form content. So I cut out the slow parts and created exciting, high-energy segments strung together into a dynamic performance.

Here’s what really made it work: inclusion. Instead of stacking the team with just black belts, I invited everyone. Kids, teens, adults, seniors, men, women—every type of practitioner. The demo team became a showcase of who we were as a studio. Before the word “inclusion” became a trend, I already saw the importance of representing the full community.
We practiced hard and hit the pavement. I called schools, community events, and festivals—anywhere that would give us 10–15 minutes of stage time.
Some weekends, we did three demonstrations on a Saturday. Summers were nonstop, with performances nearly every day.And you know what? It worked. Phones started ringing. Our classes filled. People didn’t just hear about martial arts—they saw it, felt it, and wanted to be part of it.
Fast forward to today. Yes, we use Facebook ads, TikTok videos, and Instagram Reels to get the word out about Vero Beach martial arts. Social media is powerful. But nothing replaces the live connection of seeing people perform in person. When someone sees our members on a screen and then meets them face-to-face at a demo, the connection is real, and that’s what builds trust and excitement.
That’s why I’m proud to continue this tradition today with our demo team at House of Warriors. The power of performance isn’t just in the kicks and punches—it’s in the way we connect with people and inspire them to take the first step into martial arts training.
Stay tuned—this is only the beginning.
