What does a block really teach?

I really like this picture. Let's take a look at it. One boy is throwing a kick (Esaias) and the other boy looks like he's cowering but he's not.

The boy on the left (Doglas) is practicing the correct block. He's learning to stay in the pocket and not be overwhelmed and keep himself protected. For me teaching people to punch and kick is not that hard. Anyone really can learn to do that.

The difficult thing, is teaching them to value themselves and protect themselves. The block has more meaning than just protecting your head. It's called self-defense, because if you want to defend yourself ...you have to value yourself.

I often say when people learn to do martial arts, that it's called self-defense not because you want to protect yourself, because you value yourself. If you don't have a value for yourself, you will never protect yourself.

The reason why the word self comes before defense is because you have to protect who You are. Not just physically, emotionally and spiritually as well. Some things hit harder than a punch or a kick. Words for example hit harder.

But properly learning to protect yourself and block like the boys in this photo, will help you learn to protect yourself from other things that are trying to hurt you or your child. Things like peer pressure, or bullying. It's always self before defense. It's always protection before attack.

This is why I teach martial arts. This is why I think a block is more than something to protect your head or body.. it's much deeper than that 🙂
